A Staple Piece For Any Man

Suits are a staple for men; we can wear them for work and special occasions like a gala event or a wedding dinner.

Some might argue that customizing a suit is a waste of money because we might potentially grow out of it, and if our job doesn’t require us to wear suits, then there is no reason to customize one. Though this argument is not flawed, I believe that a customised suit to your style can last you longer than a mass-produced piece.

Firstly, the quality of a customised suit is potentially better, as compared to a mass-produced piece. The tailor would have to select the fabric and probably hand-sewn certain aspects of the suit. More importantly, the quality of the fabric is likely better as you are likely paying more for it anyway. If kept properly, the threading and fabric will definitely last longer than a mass-manufactured piece.

Secondly, the suit can be customized to your preference in terms of style and fit. As long as you choose something quite neutral and simple, it can be for everyday or special occasion wear. The cut of suits is timeliness so it makes more sense to invest in a good quality one that can last through a decade or more.

The reasons stated above were enough for me to consider customizing a suit. Moreover, I needed a suit for my wedding and future occasions. Even if I don’t need to wear the full suit, I can still foresee myself wearing the blazer, pants, or inner shirt separately on different occasions.

Research On Suits Customisation In Singapore

In Singapore, there is no lack of suit tailors, with prices ranging from $200 to $3,000. The price varies depending on the material used, the shop you choose, whether it is a 2-piece or 3-piece suit, and the level of customization you opt for.

A quick Google search can indicate the nearest tailor to you. Based on my personal preference and budget, I decided to go to Far East Plaza because they have multiple tailor shops available there.

A word of advice is to play it safe and book an appointment. I booked with three different tailors to understand their services better and to see their products myself. In the end, I went with Mohan’s Custom Tailors

About Mohan’s Custom Tailors

They are one of the oldest tailors in Singapore and the few remaining authentic bespoke tailors and are listed in “The Best of Singapore Excellent Services 2007” by the Singapore Tourism Board. They also have countless positive reviews and plenty of regulars vouching for their services.

Although their shop does not look the fanciest, they do have plenty to offer in terms of cut, fabric and colours. You will be assigned a tailor to assist you through the selection process. The tailor assigned to me was very professional; he first asked me about the occasion and any preferences I had. Then, he recommended the types of suits available and explained the different prices. Prices were kept transparent, and there was no hard selling.

I chose to go with a 3-piece suit for my special occasion and two inner shirts. This amounted to 998 SGD, inclusive of GST (price is as of 2024).

The tailor presented some fabrics for me to choose from for my suit. After settling on the colour of my suit, I had to choose the colour and material of my inner shirt. The tailor recommended a few colours that complemented the suit colour of my choice. Then, we delved into the specifics of the suit and shirt. For instance, I was given the option to have a pocket in my inner shirt, I could decide whether or not I wanted the shirt buttons to be shown or hidden, and determine the cut of my suit, among other details.

The tailor was very detailed in recording my preferences, and when I was unsure, he provided advice to help me make more informed decisions.

After the details and specifics were settled, the tailor proceeded to take down my measurements. Thereafter, I made full payment for the suit. A lead time will also be provided which usually takes somewhere between 4 to 6 weeks or less.

I had a different situation where I needed it in 4 weeks (due to bad planning) and had pre-emp the tight timeline to the tailor. Thankfully, they were very accommodating and assured me that the suit would be ready in 3 weeks (with no additional charges) and I could come back to try it. If any adjustments are needed, it will ensure that we have enough buffer time. As the tailor said, “He likes to be safe than sorry.”

My Second & Third Appointment

I went back roughly 3 weeks later for my second appointment, the cutting and fitting session. The blazer was not yet ready but this session had allowed me to make adjustments to the pants and inner shirts.

At my third appointment in the fourth week, I returned to try on the final product of my shirt and full 3-piece suit, and everything was satisfactory. I collected my suit on the same day with a complementary tie given to me.

Do take note that if you still feel that some of the suit measurements are off at this stage, you can request further adjustments, though this may entail additional waiting time.

Final Impression

I was thoroughly impressed with the final product and how accommodating they were to the tight timeline. They were consistently professional throughout the process.

During the short one hour spent customizing the suit at Mohan’s, I witnessed numerous regulars returning to collect their suits. Some customers even made specific requests, like wanting gold-coloured buttons. None of these requests were dismissed, and all customers left satisfied.

This level of customer satisfaction ensures my return, and I would highly recommend Mohan’s Custom Tailor to any guy looking to get a suit.
