Know What You Are Getting Yourself Into
Knowing what you’re getting yourself into means understanding how the playing field has been set.
The playing field is set when you sign the package. Although you might feel satisfied with what the current package entitles you, it is never truly enough. There is ultimately something the studio or photographer can offer you in the later part. This is a common sales strategy so as a counter, you can think of a list of things they might offer you and you roughly can make a guess based on your package.
The playing field is defined when you sign the package. While you might initially feel satisfied with what the package offers, it’s important to realize that it’s never truly enough – that’s the reason why the photographer or studio can push for additional add-ons.
As a countermeasure, consider anticipating what they might offer based on your package.
For instance, your package might include 25 colour-edited photos and 10 fully photoshopped and colour-edited photos. During the appointment, you might find more photos that you love and wish to have them photoshopped as well. This is where you will be presented with an enhanced package to entice you to have the other photos edited.
Another common scenario is when over 400 photos are taken, and chances are you will have more trouble narrowing them down to fit your existing package. This also presents an opportunity for the salesperson to promote an upgraded package for more photos. To sweeten the deal, they might even offer a free album with additional photos printed.
Though challenging, it’s beneficial to try to anticipate all possible scenarios. This awareness can help you understand their negotiation tactics better. Being able to anticipate their sales tactics also allows you to formulate a better game plan, which brings us to our next point.
Discuss Your Game Plan Before You Go
Having a game plan can keep you grounded to your needs. It will lower the chances of being clouded with other’s opinions and prevent you from being swayed into spending more by others’ opinions.
Here are a few possible pointers for you and your partner:
- What do we need?
- What are the desired shots that we need for the wedding?
- Do we need an album or printed canvas?
By identifying these needs together, you establish priorities that are less susceptible to external persuasion. This step is also an opportunity to discuss the strategies with your partner.
For instance, if there were 3 outfits or 3 locations and you could only take back 30 edited photos, you should aim to prioritise 10 photos for each outfit or location.

Be Disciplined With The Strategies
None of the above discussion matters if you don’t stick with your game plan and priorities. It won’t be easy, but it’s crucial to keep yourself grounded. If you tend to be easily persuaded, consider having your partner moderate your thoughts during the appointment.
It’s important to acknowledge that there are photographers and studios genuinely dedicated to making your prewedding photography experience memorable. They aim to help you immortalize those special moments.
While it’s crucial to stick to your game plan and priorities, it’s also valuable to remain open to hearing their opinions and suggestions. By weighing their input alongside your considerations, you can make more informed decisions that enhance your overall experience and the quality of your photographs.
